Mental health and coronavirus

As you know, the global health concerns now about a novel coronavirus outbreak. Unfortunately, the number of cases is increasing rapidly and there is no treatment till now. In many countries, people are under quarantine at their homes or isolated in the hospitals if they were infected. That made many people panic and feel anxious of being infected by this virus. At this time, we need to support each other. We need to support those who are in quarantine and their relatives. Also, support all the medical staff who are sacrificing to help others even though they are aware that they could be infected. It is shame how some people start to avoid each other because of their origin or because that someone from their family were infected. It is not their mistake that they were infected, and it is not their mistake that they come from that region. It is shame how people are being racist instead of supporting each other.

In this situation, we encourage you to work hand by hand with the governments, take and work with their decisions in order to reduce the harms of the virus as possible. It is essential also not to panic, as there are some cases who are fully recovered. Yes we need to be aware and careful but not to panic.

Overall, it was a great opportunity for us to show our support to a mental health charity.

A Walk in The Park

Away from the hustle of the city and the busyness of our day to day life, we decided to take a nice little walk in a nice old park (St. Stephen Greens) to blend in with nature. All the group members agreed upon making this activity completely gadget free. At first it felt a little bit unnatural, however, the further we walked the more relaxed we became. The unusual sunshine felt very refreshing when combined with the nice chilly breezes. The fact that this little trip was technology-free made us appreciate the little things like the sound of birds tweeting, children laughing and the sound or air brushing against trees. The whole experience made us gain mental clarity and peace of mind. We all agreed that it was an excellent way to relive college stress and thought that we should do it again sometime.

Fatimah’s biography

Hello everyone and welcome to our harbour2harbour blog.
My name is Fatimah Alfaraj, a Saudi Foundation year medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. I am extremely happy that I got the chance to take part of the harbour2harbour elective. It is giving us the opportunity to learn about mental health from nation wide known organisation such as JIGSAW and Aware. Taking care of one’s mental health is as essential as taking care of their physical health if not more important. Unfortunately, not many people realise that. The community still have a lot of stigma especially regarding mental illnesses. People need to be more educated about how to maintain their own mental well being, and also be more aware about the various aspects of mental health and mental illness. This is the sole reason that I am excited about being a part of this elective; by raising awareness and helping to raise funds for people who are battling depression we are looking forward to making a change in our society.

Aware Lecture Series

Title: Stopping Youth Mental Health Stigma

On the 12th of February, we attended a lecture about Stopping Youth Mental Health Stigma in St. Patrick’s University Hospital. The lecture discussed the main difficulties people with mental-health issues face by the society and how to address them. It was delivered by Eilis Hennessy, a professor in Developmental Psychology.

We were interested in the topic of the lecture, as it was our first time to discuss it freely. Stigma is a society issue, as Prof. Hennessy mentioned, and that is why people often avoid talking about it. Furthermore, we, as medical students, found the lecture highly beneficial, as it raised our awareness about Mental Health issues in general, and specially Stigma. We thought that the majority of the audience would be University students, but we were surprised to know that there were some people with previous mental health issues or some other people who are interested in the lecture. The professor managed to deliver the topic in an interesting and simple way and in a short time, despite the high number of information included. She also kept adding examples to support her ideas. What we liked the most about the lecture that it was interactive, as she asked some questions to the audience during the lecture. The only thing that we did not expect was the small number of the audience, we think that people should attend lectures in such topics in order to raise their awareness and to get a chance to discuss these topics with others. The professor allocated time for questions and participations after the presentation, and a student, who had Bipolar disorder earlier in his life, described the stigma he faced.

Overall, It was a great opportunity to improve our knowledge about mental health stigma. And also having the lecture in the hospital gave us the chance to visit a Mental Health Service department.

Mental health awarenss is one of the most important issues that we need to focus more on it. Several people suffers from depression and stress but they tend to hide their feelings. Some of them unfortunately ends up with suicide. For that reason, today , my group and me, have participated in harbour to harbour in order to help raising awareness of mental health and to show some support for those who are suffering alone.

Danah and Alyaa’s Biography

We think that mental health awareness is a big part of our community, that sadly doesn’t get as much attention. As humans we all have our own personal challenges and struggles that we don’t show. We tend to hide our feelings and emotions and bottle it all up. Depending on what one’s personality is, each person has their own way of dealing with their crisis. However, one thing we as a community can offer to each other is love and support. As simple as a smile could make a difference in someone’s life.

We are Danah Ammar and Alyaa Aldokhi, FYmed students in RCSI participating in the Harbour2harbour walk in order to raise awareness for mental-health illness. We’d like to convey a message that says, “ you’re not alone”. We feel that with age you come to discover the importance of being there for each other. By providing a chance to celebrate accomplishments and milestones towards the path of positive thinking, gives people that are suffering with mental health, HOPE!

Awareness Resilience Series

Resilience is the ability to overcome challenges, adapt, and keep going after something difficult has happened in your life. From this series we have learned that no matter what you suffer from, whether it is a disease, disorder, depression, sexuality or anything that effects your mental health, you will be able to overcome it if you have the determination and courage to do so. You don’t have to be perfect all the time and it’s ok to be sad and to have flaws, as everyone in this life struggles in their own way. Getting through the hardship a person faces with their mental health issues like addiction, depression depends on the way they deal with them. It is essential to create yourself and love yourself the most. Never compare yourself with others and live the life you want to live, don’t let others plan your life for you. All you have to do is accept yourself for who you are and draw your own kind of happiness. Always believe that emotions come and go and feeling depressed or afraid doesn’t mean that you lost, it just means you have to look at things from another perspective. Have faith that one day you will find the things in life that you are good at, that might give you the feeling of success even if they are simple and always surround yourself with people that you love, as they are your biggest support and motivation in overcoming your mental health problems and play a role in your mental-wellbeing . Never let the fear of being sick to stop you from living, and don’t compare yourself with others. Always think that being different makes you unique. Resilience means that you have to have hope and faith because all you need is time to make you heal and deal with your feelings to shift the burden off your chest.
